Traditionally, it has been taught that the treatment for osteomyelitis must consist of surgical debridement of the infected bone followed by 4 to 6 weeks of intravenous antibiotics. Actually, this course of treatment is not based on any human evidence yet has been past down in medicine for generations. In the past few years there have been a number of well designed and executed trials examining the treatment of osteomyelitis and bringing into doubt both the contention that IV antibiotics and surgical debridement are necessary. This lecture will explore that evidence in hopes to start a discussion on more evidence based treatments for this common foot infection.

The United States is amid a nationwide public health emergency: an epidemic of opioid misuse and abuse that has been called the deadliest drug crisis in American history. Prescription drug opioid overdose has been defined a special drug injury that has caused death in the United States. Most overdose fatalities involve opioids, which include prescription medication, heroin, and illicit fentanyl. Within the context of acute, post-operative, and chronic pain management a proactive approach that includes patient screening for risk factors for opioid misuse, opioid addiction, as well as the use of opioid-sparing analgesics, and follow-up care that addresses both pain and pain relief must be grounded in best practices and opioid stewardship. This 60-minute program will present case examples that use clinical coping concepts, mitigating strategies, and opioid stewardship tools to moderate and prevent prescription opioid harm.
